Lasikuitutapetin asentaminen ja ylitasoittaminen (englanniksi) 2/2
I was tasked at installing a fiberglass wallpaper, so here is a step by step guide on how I accomplished this.
Here is what I'll need:
- Protective gloves
- 50mm paintbrush
- Paint rollers (a small and a big one + a corner paint roller)
- Utility knife
- Measuring tape
- Wallpaper leveler
- Spreaders (=teräslastat) of differing sizes
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Spirit level (=vesivaaka)
- a Rag, a sponge and a bucket of water
- Fiberglass wallpaper
- Tasoitetapettiliima "Even" (Kiilto Pro)
- Wall paint "Trend 7" (Teknos)
- Universal filler "Presto LF+" (Tikkurila)
Step 1: Preperations
- Before I can start installing the fiberglass, I first remove and cleanup the baseboards of any leftover filler/paint, from when I had added oversmoothing/ painted the walls. For this I used a knife to remove any lumps. Then I moved onto removing any unnecessary tape from the baseboard, so installing the fiberglass would be easier. If necessary, I added tape to the sides of the baseboard to keep the paper protecting the floor from moving. Lastly, I vaccuumed all the trash and dust from the floor.
Step 2: Measuring and cutting the fiberglass wallpaper
- The fiberglass I used was about 100 cm wide. Without needing to measure the width of the wallpaper, I could go straight to measuring the height (I measured it so that the top and the bottom had about 5 cm added to the height). Together the height of the fiberglass came to be about 203,5 cm. At the same time I had measured where I'd put the fiberglass, so that a couple of centimeters would reach the other side of the wall. I marked where I'd put the fiberglass as well as where it would end with a pencil.
- After I have measured the fiberglasss wallpaper, next I could start cutting a piece of the wallpaper. For this, I laid the fiberglass wallpaper on a table (with weights keeping it in place) and with my measuring tape I'd mark small dots where I will draw a straight line with a ruler. Then, with a utiliy knife, I cut the drawn line with the ruler right beside it, so that the knife is touching the ruler.
Step 3: Installing the fiberglass
- After I have cut a piece of the fiberglass wallpaper, I'd move onto putting wallpaper glue on to the walls. For this I used Kiilto Pro's "Durable" tasoitetapettiliima. First I spread glue on the borders with a 50 cm paintbrush, and the corners of the walls I used a roller specifically made to paint corners. Then with a bigger paint roller I generously painted glue to the wall (This makes the installation process easier, so that I can slide the wallpaper in place because of the abundace of glue)
- Then before the glue can dry, I add the fiberglass wallpaper. First I install it from the top and with my wallpaper leveler I push the glue down then to the sides, so that it overflows. Then with sponge I remove the overflowing glue from the sides and with a rag I dry the sides.
- Now I'm left with excess fiberglass on the top and bottom. To remove this, I set a wide spreader to sit on the wall where I'll be cutting the excess fiberglass with my utility knife. I do the same technique at the top.
(I repeat installing the fiberglass wallpaper to the next wall. The only acception was with installing around the window, where I had to cut an X-shaped where the wallpaper was covering the window with a utility knife. After that installation was like before)
Step 4: Installing fiberglass wallpaper to the corner
- Because of the layout of the room I'm working in, almost all the corners are of diffirent width. For the corners one of them was about 13 cm and the other 19 (I had already added about 2 cm to both of them, so that the fiberglass could reach the other wall).
- I then did the same thing as in step 3 to the corners and the last wall.
Step 5: Adding primer on the fiberglass wallpaper
- When the fiberglass wallpaper has fully dried, I can start painting the walls with primer. For this, I used Teknos' "Trend 7" primer. First I marked the top and bottom (with a paintbrush) as well as the corner (with a corner paint roller) with the primer. Then before it can fully dry, I go over the whole surface with a paint roller starting from bottom to the top. I repeated this step on the other walls.
Step 6: Adding universal filler
- Lastly I'll be adding universal filler to the walls. For this, I'll only need differing sizes of spreaders as well as the universal filler itself (I'll be using Tikkurila's Presto LF+). I start off by applying a generous amount of filler starting from the bottom and continuing to spread to the top. To smoothen out any excess universal filler, I level with a clean spreader to make the surface as smooth as possible, so that the sanding will take less time. For the corners I spread the universal filler away from the corners.
- After letting the universal filler dry for about 12-24h, I then sand the surfaces with sandpaper (with a grit level of P100). After sanding I vaccuum the walls and floor before I can add another layer of universal filler.
- After letting the second layer of universal filler dry fully, I repeat the sanding and cleaning process. Then I'm finished!
