Bedside table (Customer Comission #1)

Customer Comission #1

Step 1: Sanding

For the first step to bringing this furniture back to life, I'd firstly start with sanding the surfaces. For this, I used sandpaper on the more rougher side. After I've finished sanding, I'll have to clean any dust that had accumulated while sanding.

Step 2: Painting

After I'm done sanding the bedside table, I'll be moving forward into the next step, painting. But before I can start painting, I'll have to make sure that the bedside table is dust-free. If I hadn't cleaned the dust off and started painting right away, the paint wouldn't stick to the table's surface (nor would it dry properly).

For the paint, I used Teknos' Futura 80 primer. I used a round paintbrush and a smaller paintbrush to get those nooks and crannies of the furniture. After painting, I'd have to leave the paint to dry for at least 2 hours before I can do anything to it.

Step 3: Wood filler

For this step, wood filler will be used to fill in gaps that might be still visible. For the wood filler, I was given Teknos' Snickerisilote. I mostly used wood filler on the sides of the end table, since those parts had the most prominent gaps. I utilized Japanese spatulas to spread the wood filler onto the furniture.

Step 4: Sanding the wood fillered areas

For this step I wouldn't need to sand the whole end table again, I'll only have to sand the places where I had applicated the wood filler. For sandpapers, I had used softer papers (p120 and p150), since I wouldn't want to break the surface paint on accident.

Step 5: Custom-made paint + Painting

The customer/s had requested, that the paint should be custom-made. So as requested, I had made the paint with a little bit of help from my teacher. They had specified it should be Titanium white.
For making the paint, I'd need to make it in this order; egg, oil (specifically Linseed oil), water and lastly pigment of any kind.

After making the paint, I'd be painting every inch of bedside table again. For the brushes, I used a 50mm paintbrush and a much smaller paintbrush. When I've fully painted the outside of the table, I'll let it dry for about a week. (Custom-made paints, specifically ones that are oil-based, need about a week or less to fully dry)

Step 6: Sanding + Paintover

After letting the custom-made paint dry, the paint had become a yellow-ish color + the surfaces had become a bit too rough while drying. So I'd have to smooth the rough surfaces before I could paint over it. I had used a p320, a very smooth sandpaper to do the job + a brush to remove excess dust that accumulated.

When I've gotten the sanding done, I'd have to make a new batch of custom-made paint. I'll be using the same paintbrushes as with step 5. Same goes with how long I'll need to wait for the paint to dry (about a week).

Step 7: Cleaning the handles + Adding wax to polish later

The handles of the bedside table were covered in paint, so I'd have to remove the paint for it to look presentable to the customer. To do this, I used steel wool to remove most of the paint, but I also used a p320 sandpaper to remove any leftover paint.

When that's done, I'll move onto adding wax to the surface for later polishing. The wax I used was a Liberon's Wax and I used a cloth to add wax to the tableI'll only be applying the wax on the outer places of the table, so no need to wax the inside. After I've coated the surfaces with wax, I'll have to wait for about 2-4 hours to let it dry.

When the wax has dried, I can start polishing the table. For this step, I took a new clean cloth to better polish the wax.

And finally, after polishing the bedside table, It's finally done to be given back to the customer/s.
