(Customer Comission 2#)

 Customer Comission #2

Step 1: Removing paint with blowtorch

For the first step, I'll have to remove the paint that's on the surface.

Since the paint is an oil-paint, which is notoriously known to be quite a hard paint to remove, I'll have to use a blowtorch and some paint scrapers to do the job. I'll also be using a respirator mask and protective eyeglasses to protect myself from toxic fumes and from anything hitting my eyes.

After hours of trying to get as much paint off as possible, the end result looks like this:

Step 2: Sanding

As you can see in the picture, there's still some paint left so I'll need to do some sanding. But before I can start sanding, I need to put on a dust mask and some protective eyeware.

For the furniture, I'll be using a sandpaper as well as a sander (with a grit level of  P100 for the paper and P120 for the sander) to remove leftover paint and smoothen the surface.

After I've done with the sanding process, I'll remove any excess dust with a brush.

Step 3: Cleaning the surface

For this step, I'll just be wiping the surface with some White Spirit (=Lakkabensiini). I'll be cleaning surfaces that I had sanded on. This helps with removing any dust, that I hadn't gotten with the brush.

Step 4: Making custom-made glaze + painting

For the paint, the customer/s wanted the wood to show in their furniture, so as requested I had to make (with the help of my teacher) a custom glaze, that would enchance the look of the wooden furniture.

To start off, I first needed a container, where I could mix the glaze. After finding one, I needed to make the glaze in the order of oil (specifically linseed oil), wood turpentine (=puutärpätti), pigments (I'll be using Natural Sienna and Brown umbra to color the glaze) and lastly to speedup the drying time, I'll need a drying agent.

For paintbrushes, I used a 50 mm paintbrush and a small flat brush to paint the more hard to get places easily.

After I've painted the furniture fully, I had to wait for about a week to paint it over again. But after a week has gone by, I got to finally paint it over again.

For the second time, I used the same exact tools to do the job (50 mm paintbrush, flat brush and custom-made paint)

Step 5: Applying lacquer (=lakkaa)

After I had glazed the surfaces and waited another week, I'll be able too move onto the next step. For this, I'll need to apply lacquer 3 times and in between them I'll need to sand the surfaces and wash them with some White Spirit. For the lacquer, I'll be using Tikkurila's Unica Super 60.

I'll firstly need to sand the surfaces with sandpaper (with a grit level of P400, so that I don't accidentally ruin the glaze). After that, I'll use some White Spirit to clean any excess dust that had accummulated during the sanding process.

After cleaning the surfaces, I'll need to paint lacquer on the surfaces, which have been wiped with White Spirit.
For this, I'll be just using a 50mm paintbrush to apply the lacquer onto the furniture.

I'll be needing to wait about a day for the lacquer to fully dry. But after it has dried, I'll need to do the process for another two times before I could call this comission finished.

The second time I did the same thing as I did before: sand the surfaces with a P400 grit sandpaper (which have lacquer), wipe it clean with some White Spirit and lastly paint over the surfaces with lacquer.

For the third and last time, I'll have to wait for the lacquer to dry again until finishing the furniture. Same thing goes as last time: sand the surfaces with P400 sandpaper, wipe any excess dust with White Spirit and finally paint the last coat of lacquer onto the furniture.

After weeks of work, the furniture is fully done and able to be given back to the customer/s.
